International Sportswriters Day(缩写 ISD) is celebrated on July 23rd every year. The day was proposed in 2000 by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and marks an occasion to honor press representatives from all over the world who cover the Olympic Movement. On this day, we look back at a historic speech given by IOC President Thomas Bach titled “Sport for All – Promoting Dialogue, Building Solidarity”, which was delivered during the Olympic Games in Sydney in September of 2000. In that address he outlined his vision for sport’s role in society and how it can lead us into the future.
The full text of that speech can be read here: URL A key section of that speech touches upon the relationship between sports and media, stating : “Sport is more than just a human endeavor. It is a vehicle of unity. As such, it requires everyone’s involvement and support to flourish. This includes those people whose profession is to stand behind the lens or to shape words on paper, or to work at computer terminals——the media professionals. They too have their part to play in fostering harmony among peoples and in giving visibility and credibility to the Olympic Ideal.”
He goes on to emphasize that “it takes two to communicate”——there needs to be interaction between athletes and media to make the process successful, with both sides learning from one another. He stresses the need for mutual understanding and respect as essential elements in any healthy relationship, pointing out that, “If there are no longer any boundaries on what can and should be said about famous athletes, then why do we still find it necessary to talk to them about fair play, about good behavior, about cheating and drug use? If we cannot teach our children these values, if we cannot impress upon them that winning at any cost is not worth winning, what hope do we
